About the Fair
A Northern Ontario Tradition Celebrating Agriculture, Homecraft & Community Spirit Since 1889
The South River–Machar Fall Fair, presented by the South River–Machar Agricultural Society, has been a cherished northern Ontario tradition since 1889. For more than 130 years, the fair has united families, neighbours, and visitors from across South River, Machar Township, and the Almaguin Highlands to celebrate agricultural excellence, creative homecrafts, and the strong rural spirit that defines the region.
A Fair Rooted in Northern Farming & Early Settlement Life
The fair began during the late 19th century when settlers were establishing farms, homesteads, and small industries throughout the upper Almaguin region. Agricultural societies played a vital role in supporting these early communities, helping farmers improve livestock, share new knowledge, and strengthen ties between rural families.
Early South River–Machar fairs included livestock judging, grain and vegetable displays, preserves, sewing and quilting exhibits, and demonstrations of essential homesteading skills—traditions that remain central to today’s fair.

Agriculture at the Heart of the South River–Machar Fall Fair
Agriculture continues to shape the fair’s identity, and exhibits proudly showcase:
- Dairy and beef cattle
- Sheep, goats, poultry, and small livestock
- Field crops, grain, vegetables, and garden produce
- Woodworking, rural crafts, and northern homesteading skills
These displays honour the hard work and resilience of northern farm families who continue to contribute to the region’s agricultural heritage.
The homecraft and arts divisions, including preserves, baking, sewing, quilting, knitting, floriculture, photography, arts, and junior exhibits, celebrate the creativity and domestic traditions that remain central to rural life.
