Clinton was once known as Rattenbury, a name that reflected its earliest settlement period. The community was later renamed Clinton after Clinton, New York, a change that coincided with its growth and rising importance as a regional centre. Few people realize that Clinton briefly rivalled larger nearby towns as an industrial and commercial hub, thanks to its mills and railway access. While quieter today, the town’s past as a bustling agricultural and industrial crossroads still echoes in its layout, landmarks, and long-standing role at the heart of Huron County.
