About the Fair

A Northumberland Tradition Celebrating Agriculture, Homecraft & Community Spirit Since 1831

The Port Hope Fair, presented by the Port Hope & District Agricultural Society, is one of Ontario’s oldest agricultural fairs, first held in 1831, even before Port Hope was formally incorporated as a town. For nearly two centuries, the fair has been a cherished gathering place for farmers, families, and neighbours from across Northumberland County, celebrating the agricultural achievements and community spirit that continue to define the region.

A Fair Rooted in Early Settlement & Rural Heritage

The Port Hope Fair began during a time when the area was expanding rapidly with farms, mills, and early industry. Local agricultural societies formed to encourage better farming practices, support rural development, and unite community members. The fair quickly became a highlight of the year, offering farmers a place to showcase livestock, compare produce, and share knowledge essential to building successful homesteads.

Early fairs included judging of cattle, horses, grain, vegetables, fruit, domestic arts, and demonstrations of rural skills, helping strengthen the region’s agricultural foundation and community bonds.
