About the Fair

A Norfolk County Tradition Celebrating Agriculture, Homecraft & Community Spirit Since 1857

The Houghton Fair, proudly hosted by the Houghton Agricultural Society, has been a cherished rural tradition in Norfolk County since 1857. For more than 165 years, the fair has brought together farm families, neighbours, and visitors from Houghton, Fairground, Langton, and surrounding communities to celebrate agricultural heritage, homecraft excellence, and the enduring spirit of rural Ontario.

A Fair Born from Pioneer Roots & Agricultural Cooperation

The Houghton Fair was established during a time of rapid settlement across southwestern Norfolk County. As farms, schoolhouses, and early roads took shape, agricultural societies became essential community hubs—sharing knowledge, improving livestock, and strengthening rural cooperation.

The early Houghton fairs featured livestock judging, grain and vegetable competitions, preserves, quilts, baked goods, and demonstrations of the everyday skills that kept early homesteads thriving, traditions still proudly represented today.
