About the Fair

A Wellington County Tradition Celebrating Agriculture, Homecraft & Community Spirit Since 1859

The Harriston-Minto Fall Fair, presented by the Harriston-Minto Agricultural Society, is one of Wellington County’s longest-running rural celebrations. First held in 1859, the fair has been a central gathering place for families, farmers, neighbours, and visitors for more than 160 years. It proudly honours the agricultural roots, creative traditions, and community values that continue to shape Harriston and the Town of Minto.

A Fair Rooted in Early Settlement & Agricultural Growth

The fair began during the mid-19th century, when pioneers were clearing land, building farms, and forming the early villages of Minto Township. Agricultural societies played an essential role in helping settlers improve livestock, share farming knowledge, and strengthen community identity.

Early Harriston fairs featured cattle and horse judging, grain competitions, garden produce, homemade goods, and demonstrations of essential homesteading skills—traditions that still form the backbone of today’s fair.

Agriculture at the Heart of the Harriston-Minto Fall Fair

Agriculture remains the foundation of the fair and is showcased proudly through exhibits such as:

  • Dairy and beef cattle

  • Field crops, hay, grain, vegetables, and garden produce
  • Woodworking, rural crafts, and homesteading demonstrations

These exhibits reflect the hard work, skill, and dedication of farming families across Minto and Wellington County.

The fair’s homecraft divisions, including baking, preserves, quilting, sewing, knitting, floriculture, photography, fine arts, and junior categories, celebrate the creativity and domestic traditions that remain deeply rooted in rural life.
