About the Fair

A Proud Bluewater Tradition Celebrating Agriculture, Rural Craftsmanship & Community Spirit

The Zurich Country Fair, presented by the Zurich Agricultural Society, is one of Huron County’s longest-standing rural traditions. With origins reaching back to the late 19th century, the fair honours the agricultural heritage, homecraft skills, and community pride that have shaped Zurich and the surrounding countryside for generations.

A Fair with Deep Rural Roots

The Zurich Country Fair began during a time when agricultural societies across Ontario were helping farmers improve breeding, share knowledge, and strengthen rural communities. Zurich, surrounded by rich Huron County farmland and deeply rooted in German-Swiss settlement, quickly became a natural gathering place for such an exhibition.

The earliest fairs allowed farm families to compare crops and livestock, display the results of their labour, and take pride in the traditions that supported rural life. Those values remain central to the fair today.

A Celebration of Agriculture & Rural Skills

Agriculture has always been at the heart of the Zurich Country Fair. Local farm families have long exhibited their best:

  • Dairy and beef cattle
  • Sheep and goats
  • Poultry and small livestock
  • Garden produce and field crops

These exhibits reflect the care, knowledge, and multi-generation dedication that define agriculture in Huron County.

Homecrafts are equally cherished. Quilting, preserves, baking, sewing, floral work, woodworking, crafts, and youth-created projects showcase the creativity and craftsmanship that are part of rural living. Many families have participated in these divisions for decades, preserving skills passed from one generation to the next.

Youth Involvement & Agricultural Learning

Youth participation has always been a cornerstone of the Zurich Country Fair. Through 4-H clubs, junior classes, and school projects, young people gain experience in:

  • Animal care
  • Craftsmanship
  • Domestic arts
  • Agriculture-related skills
  • Leadership and responsibility

Many adult exhibitors and volunteers first took part in the fair as children, demonstrating the fair’s lasting influence on community engagement.

Sustained by Dedicated Volunteers

The fair is made possible by the commitment of the Zurich Agricultural Society and its volunteers. Their efforts, coordinating exhibits, maintaining fairgrounds, preserving heritage categories, and encouraging youth involvement, ensure that the fair remains meaningful and true to its roots.

These volunteers, often representing several generations of involvement, keep the fair thriving year after year.

These settlers built homesteads, barns, churches, and local shops, many of which created the foundation of the modern village. Their influence is still seen today in local family names, early buildings, and traditions passed down through generations.
