Almonte is a historic rural town in Lanark County, located within the Township of Mississippi Mills. Set along the Mississippi River, Almonte developed as one of eastern Ontario’s most important early industrial and service centres for surrounding agricultural communities.

Settlement in the area began in the early 19th century, with the river providing reliable water power for mills and manufacturing. Almonte quickly grew beyond a simple mill village, becoming a regional hub with stone buildings, factories, and a busy main street that supported both local residents and nearby farm families. Its well-preserved historic core reflects this period of growth and prosperity.

Today, Almonte blends its industrial heritage with a vibrant small-town atmosphere. Its downtown, residential neighbourhoods, and surrounding countryside make it a destination in its own right—valued equally for its history, walkability, and strong community identity.

Almonte is surrounded by the rolling farmland of Lanark County, a region long associated with mixed farming and family-run agricultural operations. The countryside features a combination of livestock farming, hay and pasture, and field crops, creating a diverse agricultural landscape shaped by both terrain and tradition.

Historically, Almonte’s mills and factories played a direct role in supporting agriculture, processing grain, wool, and other farm products from the surrounding area. That close relationship between town and countryside helped define Almonte’s role as a service and supply centre for rural eastern Ontario.

Every community has a few stories that don’t always make the guidebooks—this is one of them.

Almonte is often called the “Mill of the Mississippi”, but fewer people know that it was once known as Ramsay’s Mills, named after early settler James Ramsay. Even more surprising, Almonte became internationally known in the 19th century for its textile and woollen mills, earning it the nickname “the woollen town.” Long before tourism or modern commuting, Almonte’s global reputation was built on river-powered industry processing the products of nearby farms, quietly connecting this rural Ontario town to markets far beyond its borders.
